چکیده

We present parametric finite element approximations of curvature flows for curves in R, d ≥ 2, as well as for curves on two-dimensional manifolds in R3. Here we consider the curve shortening flow, curve diffusion and the elastic flow. It is demonstrated that the curve shortening and the elastic flows on manifolds can be used to compute nontrivial geodesics, and that the corresponding geodesic curve diffusion flow leads to solutions of partitioning problems on two-dimensional manifolds in R3. In addition, we extend these schemes to anisotropic surface energy densities. The presented schemes have very good properties with respect to stability and the distribution of mesh points, and hence no remeshing is needed in practice.

Numerical Simulation of Free Surface Flows and Comparison of Symmetry and Real Boundary Conditions at the Free Surface

For implementation of the free surface boundary condition, a new subroutine has been introduced to an existing steady 3-D body fitted code. This code was previously written for steady flow simulation in closed ducts. The algorithm used in this subroutine reduces the instability problem according to the free surface wave generation. For code validation, it was applied to two different open cha...

Contour Parametrization via Anisotropic Mean Curvature Flows

We present a new implementation of anisotropic mean curvature flow for contour recognition. Our procedure couples the mean curvature flow of planar closed smooth curves, with an external field from a potential of point-wise charges. This coupling constrains the motion when the curve matches a picture placed as background. We include a stability criteria for our numerical approximation.

Electro-magneto-hydrodynamics Flows of Burgers' Fluids in Cylindrical Domains with Time Exponential Memory

This paper investigates the axial unsteady flow of a generalized Burgers’ fluid with fractional constitutive equation in a circular micro-tube, in presence of a time-dependent pressure gradient and an electric field parallel to flow direction and a magnetic field perpendicular on the flow direction. The mathematical model used in this work is based on a time-nonlocal constitutive equation for s...

Elastic flow with junctions: Variational approximation and application to nonlinear splines

We consider stable semidiscrete approximations of parameterized curve networks for gradient flows of elastic type functionals. Here meaningful and relevant conditions at junction points, such as double and triple junctions, need to be derived and suitably discretized. Examples for double junction types are C0 attachment and C1 continuity. We develop strong and weak formulations for the elastic ...
